Welcome to my Mazda Eunos / MX5. There are not many of these around with this specification and performance, and certainly not many in this condition. Please forgive me if this advert is somewhat lengthy, but a special car deserves a special listing........

This Mazda Eunos / MX5 V-Spec, imported from Japan in 1997, has undergone over £17,000 of performance, handling and cosmetic upgrades since April 2006. The Mazda now boasts exceptional performance due to the installation of a Jackson Racing supercharger, air / water intercooler, MOTEC engine management system, with refinement to an already superb chassis through Koni sports suspension upgrades. The car also benefits from a professional full body respray in its original British Racing Green, new tan hood, plus an exhaustive list of other upgrades detailed below. The Mazda now carries an agreed insurance value with Peter Best Insurance of £10,000.

History >>

As a Eunos, the car was imported from Japan at the end of 1997. I purchased the car in October 2005 and decided in April 2006 that the car was to be my project for turning what was already a very nice example of this fabulous little roadster into a 100% completely focused driving machine. The subsequent upgrades have been painstakingly documented, with all bills kept of the work done (approx. £17k in total) and all instruction / installation manuals retained. The expenditure for this car has included the following:

  • Jackson Racing supercharger - £1.5k (see pictures)
  • Jackson Racing Intercooler - £1k
  • MOTEC engine management system - £3.5k
  • Koni Sports ride kit - £800
  • IL Stainless exhaust - £300
  • Complete professional respray in May 2007 - £2.5k

The finished article is the culmination of around two and a half years of carefully considered engine performance, chassis and cosmetic upgrades. Most parts used to achieve the high standard of this Mazda have been sourced from the main players for Mazda performance cars, including:

  • Moss Europe

Engine + Transmission >>

This is where the fun really started with this Mazda! In April 2006, the project really kicked off. The engine underwent a total professional rebuild by AIG Motors in Cumnor, Oxford. This included a full stripdown (see pictures), including replacement of all gaskets, seals, pulleys, guides, pumps and belts, with the following components either being added or replaced:

  • Jackson Racing supercharger
  • Jackson Racing intercooler
  • High pressure fuel pump
  • New oil pump
  • Wossner forged pistons (these were sourced specially in Germany, specifically for this car)
  • Laminated Steel head gasket
  • APC Competition clutch (see pictures)
  • Magnecor ignition leads
  • Four branch stainless exhaust manifold
  • Cat bypass pipe
  • Cat back stainless IL exhaust system
  • Billet aluminium oil cap

The engine rocker cover, supercharger and inlet manifold have all been powdercoated in green (see pictures).

Once the engine rebuild was complete, the car was then sent to Owen Developments for the following work to be completed (total cost £3.5k):

  • Installation of MOTEC engine management system and remap to provide tangible supercharger performance gains (now runs at 6psi pressure). This has also included an increase of the rev limit, from 6,500rpm to 7,500rpm.
  • Optimisation of performance during rolling road session

The Mazda is currently producing a very healthy 188bhp with the supercharger running at 6psi pressure. Owen Developments have said that further tuning is an option with the MOTEC system, and with a larger crankshaft pulley installed, the engine is capable of running around 220bhp. Remember, this is in a 940kg car!

  • Koni ride height kit (sports springs + adjustable shock absorbers [perch height and rebound dampening])
  • Uprated front and rear anti-roll bars
  • 4-wheel laser alignment for camber, toe and caster. Carried out at Powerstation, Tewksbury with electronic printout of adjusted values.

Exterior >>

  • The Mazda underwent a full professional respray in May 2007, still in its original British Racing Green colour. The car now looks stunning and overall condition of the paint is exceptional with a beautiful deep shine.
  • A professionally louvred headlamp cover has also been fitted to assist with airflow to the engine bay (see pictures)
  • A clear indicator pack has also been fitted which in our opinion, nicely compliments the paintwork.
  • The only noticable mark is to the adhesive front numberplate where a small (circa 1cm) section of the white background has lifted. OK, this is being probably a bit fussy, but we want to be honest here. Replacement adhesive number plates can however, be easily sourced.
  • The Mazda also benefits from a tan hood and clear plastic rear window, professionally fitted by Hot Hoods at the end of 2005. Both remain in excellent condition.

Interior >>

  • The V-Spec Eunos / MX5 is one of the highest equipped Eunos / MX5s with tan leather seats and air conditioning as standard
  • Also included is a Nardi wooden steering wheel, gearknob and handbrake grip
  • Stainless steel kickplates
  • A tan tonneau cover (visible in some of the pictures) is also available.
  • The interior is generally in very good condition. The only real mark to the leather interior is some wear to the driver's seat bolster which all Eunos / MX5's seem to suffer from. This can be seen below.

  • The car is fitted with bespoke overmats which include yellow piping and the MX5 motif.

Wheels / Tyres >>

  • Team Dynamics 16 Inch Multispoke wheels on Yokohama Parada 205/45/16 V rated tyres
  • All alloy wheels are in good overall condition with no sign of heavy kerbing (see pictures). All centre caps are on the wheels
  • All tyres in good condition with plenty of tread

Driving >>

  • Well, what do you expect?! 188bhp in a 940kg rear-wheel drive car (the handling of which is widely considered one of the purest driving experiences available). We believe the best way to describe the performance once you put your foot down is think of a motorbike with 4 wheels! With the MOTEC management system installed, the engine is so free-revving and so quick to spool up. Coupled to the note of the IL stainless exhaust, the whine of the Jackson Racing supercharger is one you cannot get tired of! The Koni suspension upgrades complete the package and gives total confidence in the car's abilities on the road; fantastically compliant but still comfortable enough to be driven with ease.
